Breast cancer rates are still increasing in our society and, even with more breast conserving surgery being performed, many women still require mastectomy. I aim to offer immediate breast reconstruction at the time of breast removal by working closely with your breast cancer surgeon.
This is ideally performed using a patient’s own tissue (usually the tissue discarded after a tummy tuck), however implant based reconstruction is another alternative. For many reasons some women are not offered immediate reconstruction at the time of the mastectomy and we can perform similar reconstruction at a later stage after cancer treatment is complete, or even many years later.
High risk patients with strong family histories of breast cancer can be offered preventative mastectomy and immediate reconstruction of both breasts. This is only done in appropriate cases with significant discussion and counselling.
