With the ever-evolving pandemic, we are living with a constant sense of uncertainty that impacts our ability to make plans and see them through.

The COVID-19 vaccine has been positioned as a way out of this constant uncertainty and returning to some kind of post-pandemic normalcy.

As the day for COVID-19 vaccination draws closer for many Australians, the need to carefully plan elective surgeries becomes more important.

If you are considering an elective surgery procedure this year, there is some essential information you should know.

Elective surgery and the COVID Vaccine

When considering dates for your plastic surgery, we recommend thinking about when you can get your COVID-19 vaccination and whether you want to have the vaccine before or after your surgery.

If possible, we recommend scheduling your vaccination before your elective surgery procedure, ensuring you consider how many vaccinations you require. COVID-19 vaccines should not be given within 1-week of surgery.

If you also intend to have the seasonal flu shot, you should be aware that the two vaccinations need to be administered at least 14 days apart.

Possible delays

With the possibility of new COVID-19 cases in Perth in the future, it’s important to note that there may be delays for your elective surgery, as hospitals prioritise providing care to patients with urgent, life threatening cases or cancer.

If you’d like to schedule reconstructive, cosmetic or non-surgical procedures for 2021 it’s best to arrange an appointment soon to discuss your individual needs and plan around your vaccination date.
