The world of high-tech hair removal procedures has been booming for some time now and the popularity of these treatments is set to grow with continuous advances in technology. Here at Dr Mark Lee’s clinic, IPL (intense pulsed light) hair removal procedures are some of our most highly requested treatments so we wanted to take a closer look at exactly what IPL hair removal is and some things you should know if you are considering a hair removal treatment.
How does IPL hair removal work?
At our clinic we use the Cutera ProWave hair removal system which uses an infrared light to target the base of the hair follicle. The intense pulsed light is absorbed by the pigment in each hair follicle and converted into heat, thus damaging the root of the follicle and affecting its ability to grow.
When will results from IPL hair removal show?
After each IPL hair removal treatment there is typically a 10% to 15% reduction in hair growth. It is important to point out that hair actually grows at different rates and it goes through three distinct phases; growth, regression and resting. The ProWave hair removal treatment works by disabling the hair that is in the growth phase at the time of the treatment. Since other hairs, even in the same area of the body, may not be in the same growth cycle, additional IPL hair removal treatments may be required to disable all of the follicles in the treatment area.
Who are the best candidates for IPL hair removal treatments?
As we mentioned previously, IPL hair removal works the most effectively when the infrared light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle, and much like heat being attracted to you when you wear black clothes, IPL is attracted to darker hair follicles. While lighter hairs can be treated with IPL, more treatments are typically required when compared to darker haired patients.
Advantages of the ProWave hair removal system
There are two features of the Cutera ProWave IPL system that put it ahead of other hair removal technologies. Firstly, the ProWave hair removal system operates at the highest infrared wavelength frequency available on the market, above 770 nm, which is considered to be the optimal level in order to achieve hair removal. Secondly, the ProWave’s output spectrum has three distinct programs that customise the wavelength and pulse width so that each treatment is specifically suited to each individual patient.
